While over at C’s blog this morning, I got the most unexpected memory of a delightful animal friend long forgotten.
No. It’s not a childhood pet. I could never forget my wonderful childhood companion, my dog Chippy.
It was a Black Cow.
And this memory got me all salivating to find another Black Cow. Not a cow of the Jersey, Holstein, Brown, Swiss or Guernsey variety… but of the candy variety.
C blogged about candy. And one candy that absolutely had me at “moo” was a Black Cow. This candy was like a Sugar Daddy, but covered with a thick layer of dark chocolate. It came on a stick, and was meant to be licked, sucked, twisted, chewed and enjoyed for a long, long time. I will admit that I could eat 3 of these consecutively, on a good day… but one was certainly a treat in itself.
The Black Cow came a’callin’ when I lived in New Hampshire. I was 9 or 10 years old. When we moved to Rhode Island a few years later, I couldn’t find one anywhere. Then, one fine day, I was with my Dad when he stopped at a little variety store on Main Street of my home town to buy a pack of cigarettes. I went inside with him. And there, behind the finger-print stains of the glass candy case, was a box of Black Cows. I was speechless.
I was hooked again. I don’t remember what they milked my Dad for, but he bought me the entire box. 24 of ‘em. My Dad just made me promise that my daily recommended intake be one Black Cow per day.
Sorry, Dad.
Ah… I had my Black Cow obsession for many years. Then, just as quickly as they sauntered into my life, they were gone. I actually felt a little guilty this morning that I hadn’t thought of a Black Cow in decades… but since I do live again in the same town that the little variety store was in, I found myself in my car, returning to the scene of the cow. It is now a real estate office.
I wonder if they sell Black Cows?
So… what is your favorite candy obsession? Pray, tell.
(I couldn’t help but google Black Cow. It seems my candy has been discontinued and I am udderly disappointed.)

Well, we all know that my favorite childhood candy was Junior Mints… or as I would say in my cute little RI accent, “Junyah Mints.” Who could forget me telling Dad to buy me some on video?
And then in my teens, of course, I was obsessed with Skittles. Remember you’d pack me some in my lunch everyday? I do still love Skittles now, but they hurt my jaw to chew. I’m getting old! I need a softer candy!

I love, love, love Almond Rocha, though I haven’t had it in years. Anytime I see that pink tin in the stores, I can’t help but think of my mom, who would always receive a stash for Christmas.
But if I’m reaching for a candy bar in the check out lane, it’s either gonna be a Snickers or Heath Bar.
Oy! I have a sweet tooth now!

Favorite candy? Hmm? That’s actually a tough one. I’m not a big candy eater, more of a baked goods junkie (I love, love donuts!) If I am going to eat candy it will be chocolate (usually dark) covered nuts or gummy bears (and only the soft, good ones.)
I loved your comment about your beautiful day! You must be the funnest grandma around

Dove chocolate. Dark. Period. A bite sized one a day. Good for your heart.

Please help me encourage that they make them in 2010! Below is an email that I received from the company that owns the rights. The parent company is PA Dutch Candies.
Thank you for your inquiry. Black Cow has been out of production for a while now.
We did recently acquire the rights to manufacture that brand, and will look at re-introducing the item again in the future. Perhaps in 2010 or 2011.

My favorite candy was the Black Cow sucker as well. I wish they were still around. I have looked for one for years and very disappointment they are discontinued.

Discontinued, what do mean the black cow was discontinued, when, how, why? Can they do that? Is that legal? Isn’t that sort of like taking down the Statue of Liberty? Are you sure it was discontinued?

my favorite candy that I am trying to find is both the Black Cow and the big mouth sucker. Do you remember it? It was a huge sucker with gum in the middle of it on a stick. It came in Pink, red & purple. Aahhh they were sooo good the flavor was amazing!!!
Need we not forget either the black cow YES just like a sugar daddy covered in a rch layer of chocolate. I have not been able to find them so I went and bought a bag of sugar daddies some melting chocolates and made my own but it just did not taste the same!!
If anyone knows where I can find either of these please email me and let me know!!
