Tip: Drink plenty of fluids and avoid beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine. Sipping cool water or fruit juice is best.
2 Danetta // May 30, 2009 at 1:34 pm
Tip: Keep your skin moist and cool. A good idea for children is to have a sprinkler going that they can run through, or arm them with water guns. I also like to keep a sprayer/mister bottle filled with water and spray/mist my son with it every now and then. Not only does it keep them cool, the kids LOVE it. They always yell “Spray me!!”
3 Danetta // May 30, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Tip: Always wear loose fitting clothing, preferably of light colors and wear a hat, sunglasses and waterproof sunscreen.
4 Danetta // May 30, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Tip: The sun’s rays are most intense between the hours of 10AM and 4PM, so during those times, stay in shaded areas as much as possible, wear a hat with a big brim or stay under an umbrella.
5 Danetta // May 30, 2009 at 1:41 pm
Tip: Use a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15 and make sure to use enough. If your near water or sand, apply even more. (the sun’s rays reflect like a mirror) Slather it on every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
6 Danetta // May 30, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Tip: Don’t use any scented soaps, perfumes, or hair spray. Those bees and mosquitoes just love the scent.

I keep a bag packed in my car with sample sizes of everything from an extra diaper and pull-up, sample size of many products like sunscreen, apple juice, bandaids, etc. I do this for my grandkids. Even though mom may be along and has a bag packed for them, the extra stuff has come in handy many times.

When I leave the house, I like to bring a couple of frozen water bottles. Many times it has come in handy when it has been hotter than we thought and have gotten very thirsty. It has also been handy as a make shift ice pack.

My son is an epileptic and during his seizures he gets very hot. We have one of those water/fan combos. Not only have we used it for him when he has a seizure, we have used it when we have been overheated.

Use a spray-on sunscreen on your kids - it is a lot less messy.
22 bridget // May 31, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Always bring pre-moistened wipes to the beach to clean up sticky, sandy hands.
23 bridget // May 31, 2009 at 7:28 pm

Loads of sunscreen to avoid burning delicate little skin.
28 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 8:49 am
Fun hats and fun sunglasses to avoid burnt heads and eyes.
29 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 8:51 am
Reduce the intensity of outdoor activities when heat and humidity reach critical levels. This would be a great time to visit an indoor gym or the library.
30 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 8:51 am
Stay well hydrated
31 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 8:53 am
Wear light-colored and lightweight clothing limited to one layer of absorbent material.
32 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 8:54 am
Avoid scented soaps, lotions, perfumes, ect. Bugs LOVE them … kids/adults don’t!
33 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 8:57 am
Always keep a First-Aid kit handy.
34 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 8:59 am
Be cautious of metal slides or metal playground equipment. They get hot quick and can leave serious burns.
35 Linda S // Jun 1, 2009 at 9:01 am
Keep a fun-n-da-sun bag packed. You never know when you may want to detour your day and head to the pool or lake. Last minute trips like this can be a treat for kids.

Pool your community moms and plan a summer block party.
38 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:04 am
Lathering up my daughter with sunscreen is much easier done at home (before leaving for the pool). When I try applying it at the pool, she’s too busy trying to escape me to play in the water.
39 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:06 am
Don’t have time for a trip to the pool, lake or beach? Don’t forget how easy it is to turn your backyard into a water park. All it takes is a hose/sprinkler and an imaginative toddler. Bubbles help too!
40 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:07 am
Always take an extra pair of Huggies Little Swimmers with you to the pool. Often times I run into a mom who forgot to bring a pair for her tyke, so I give her my spare. It brings peace of mind to all moms wtih kids in the pool to know that if someone poops, it’ll stay in the swimmers (not the unrelaible everyday diaper). Huggies Swimmers are the best!
41 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:09 am
Always keep a couple of Juicy Juice boxes in your pool bag. After an hour of splashing around, this is the only thing that will tempt my toddler to get out of the pool for a break.
42 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:12 am
Wear sunscreen EVERY day - there are hundreds of reasons ranging from sunburn to wrinkles…
43 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:13 am
Always keep an extra towel in your car - you never know when you’ll be thrown in the pool by a fun-loving husband and daughter…
44 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:16 am
If you live within walking distance of your pool, invest in a wagon (with a canopy). It’s perfect for hauling floats, snacks and your favorite little swimmers.
45 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:18 am
Let your little one pick out a hat and sunglasses when you’re out shopping. I’ve found that they are much more likely to wear what they pick out themselves. Who cares if they don’t match their swimsuit…
46 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:19 am
Always rinse out swimsuits with fresh water after being in the ocean or pool. Chlorine and salt water are murder on lycra.
47 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:20 am
When choosing a location to sit at the beach or pool, go as far away as you can from trash cans. Nothing ruins a fun day at the water more than stinky garbage surrounded by bees and flies.
48 Jennifer B // Jun 1, 2009 at 11:22 am
Late afternoon/early evening trips to the pool on weeknights are the best because the sun’s rays are not as intense, the temperture has started cooling off, it’s less crowded and - most importantly - we can all go as a family (important for families who have one or both working parents).

Make sure that EVERYONE in the fam is wearing a hat! Can’t stress enough how important it is (you know, the whole sunstroke, heat exhaustion prevention thingy). If the kids see Mom and Dad without a hat on, what makes us think that they’ll want to wear one? Live by example
61 C // Jun 2, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Make sure to bring lots of water (and juice) to keep hydrated!
62 C // Jun 2, 2009 at 12:19 pm
I know many of us are sun worshipers, but it’s also important to cover up in the hottest hours of the day. Make sure to protect skin from those strong UV rays. A light natural fibre shirt or cover up is fashionable and practical.
63 C // Jun 2, 2009 at 12:22 pm
I use a UV/bug screen that fits over Little One’s carseat and stroller. Keeps her safe from the sun’s strong rays and from those pesty ’skeeters and blackflies we get up here!
64 C // Jun 2, 2009 at 12:23 pm
At the beach, set up a little sun shade for the kids. They look like little tents that have a UV shade and mesh. The little ones can nap or hang out in there and get some protection at the same time.
65 C // Jun 2, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Take lots and lots of Huggies Baby Wipes with you! I know I never leave home without them! Beach + diaper explosion = icky! LOL!
66 C // Jun 2, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Pack a picnic basket with the kids! Whenever we go to the beach, we get our nieces to help pack the picnic lunch and we all have fun lounging on the beach with our goodies! Picnics are always fun!

Fruit salads are a great snack to fill the tummy and get liquids into your children while they have fun in the sun! Watermelon is a summer favorite here!
76 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Water shoes are great for the beach! Little ones tend to run toward the water and may burn their little toes on the hot sand. Also, they work more effeciently than slippers/flip-flops.
77 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:14 pm
When heading to the beach I bring soap/shampoo to wash my children up in the outdoor showers at the end of our visit. This way, when they fall alseep in the car I don’t have to worry about waking them up to bathe.
78 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Summer fun also means BBQ dinners. Never leave the grill unattended. Little ones tend to be drawn to the fire and can hurt themselves.
79 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I small pop-up tent is great to have in the trunk during warm weather. At the beach or park, I let my older children run and play while keeping my toddler and baby covered in the shade. Great for those must have power naps, too!
80 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:19 pm
An indoor mall is a great place to cruise on those:
“It’s too hot in the house and too hot to be outside” days. Yeah for free air conditioning!
81 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:21 pm
I store the children’s sand toys in a netted laundry bag. It helps to keep the sand out of the bag and can be found in most Dollar Stores.
82 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Bike rides are a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the weather. Don’t forget your helmet!
83 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:30 pm
I make sure everyone uses the potty before jumping in the water. This helps to avoid accidents.
84 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Keep a pair of tweezers handy for splinters and bee stings. Neosporin and Band-Aids will help to complete this package nicely!
85 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Apply aloe vera to those sunburn spots. It helps to cool the skin!
86 Jammas // Jun 3, 2009 at 12:35 pm

89 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:31 pm

90 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Buy the swim tops and shorts for your kids instead of the standard swimsuits. They do a great job of preventing sunburn.
91 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Wear light colored clothes while in the sun to stay cool and keep the bugs away.
92 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Make sure that your kids take plenty of breaks when playing in the water. Having fun snacks and drinks makes it much easier.
93 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:36 pm
A flat bedsheet makes for a great beach blanket.
94 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:37 pm
Always take an umbrella with you to the beach. It’s cumbersome, but well worth it!
95 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:37 pm
A spray bottle filled with ice water is a refreshing treat when lounging in the sun.
96 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Keep bugs away with citronella candles and Skin So Soft.
97 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:38 pm

98 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Keep an extra juice box in your pool bag - it’s always nice to have an extra plus it won’t expire if you don’t use it immediately.
99 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:47 pm
Use SPF 50+ for your children. Their skin is so fragile.
100 Carolyn // Jun 3, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Tip#1 Always bring water! A dehydrated kid is a cranky sick kide!
127 Harmony Poisson // Jun 8, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Tip#2 Always bring snacks.
A quick trip to the beach can turn into a whole day before you need it and not all places have stores/concessions and most of those don’t take cards when you need them to!
128 Harmony Poisson // Jun 8, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Tip#3 Have your child wear a hat, always keep one in the car or their backpack for those surprise trips. They may seem fine all day but that night when you get them home and the sun stroke hits you’ll know it’s too late.
129 Harmony Poisson // Jun 8, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Tip#4 Bring hand sanitizer and wipes. You never know what germs they could get into or what injuries they might sustain.
130 Harmony Poisson // Jun 8, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Tip#5 A shovel and a toy will go a long way if theres no other kids to play with. The simplest item can keep a kid occupied.
131 Harmony Poisson // Jun 8, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Tip#6 Don’t forget yourself. A book, a drink….we so often worry about the kids that we forget to take care of ourselves
132 Harmony Poisson // Jun 8, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Tip#7 Have fun! Try to slacken the rules and the yelling and let the kids get dirty, and experiment. You can always scrub and sanitize them later:)
