Win a ONE YEAR SUPPLY of Scott towels and bath products *Updated with winner!*

September 18th, 2008 · 50 Comments · Bath

You know how we tend to take on some of our parents’ characteristics, mannerisms and/or ways of saying things (sometimes despite ourselves!)?

My husband never says, “paper towel.” It’s a “Scott towel,” no matter what brand the paper towel happens to be. To be honest, it always kind of drove me crazy, and I’d say to him, “Who calls it that!? It’s a paper towel!”

Then one day we were at his parents’ house and his mom said to me, “Can you hand me a Scott towel?” And it was one of those aha! moments Oprah always talks about. (Or maybe an oh no! he’s just like him mom! moment.)

In any case, we really do use Scott products in our house, and I was just recently introduced to the brand’s really great online tool - the Scott Common Sense community.

It’s FREE to sign up, and then you can instantly read and share fantastic tips and solutions with other members. And not just tips and solutions about cleaning the home (though I’ve found wonderful ideas in this area)… there are also tips about saving time and money, organizing, staying healthy - and more.

There are coupons and other special offers to be found at Scott Common Sense, too. I printed a $1 coupon out last night and said to my husband, “Look, honey! We can go get paper towels that happen to be Scott with this coupon!”

But I guess it would’ve been easier to just say, “Let’s go get some Scott towels with this coupon.”

Maybe that’ll be my next tip to share with the Scott Common Sense community in the “Everyday Sense” category… it’s good just let your spouse be him/herself.

************

We have a ONE YEAR SUPPLY of Scott towels and bath products for one lucky winner!

The One Year Supply of Scott products breaks down to:

We use Scott towels and bath tissue in our home and wouldn’t use anything else.
My favorite cleaning tip is for spot cleaning carpet. I have found that keeping a spray bottle containing a mix of white vinegar and water is, without a doubt, the best solution to a fresh carpet stain. When something is spilled I grab the bottle, spray the spill, and grab a couple of paper towels to soak up the mess and not only is the spill/stain removed but it also smells clean afterwards.

We are a Scott family too!! I can’t tell you how much I’d love to win this (thanks for the post on Twitter about it)

Favorite cleaning tip: getting a container with a handle that I can put all my cleaning supplies in and carry that around the house as I clean rather than juggling everything.

Also? Letting my 6 year old help now, while he still LIKES to clean!

  • 3 Susanne // Sep 18, 2008 at 11:42 am

I usually prefer the wet-wipe version cleaning supplies, but when you need something thatll last a little longer i use a scott towel. especially when cleaning electronics and stuff. just a spritz from a cleaner onto the paper towel and you can finish a large job in no time.

I get motivated to clean the house by putting on some fun music. It makes the whole thing way more enjoyable.

  • 5 flipflopmamma // Sep 18, 2008 at 12:49 pm

I love Emily’s idea of putting on music to clean to! Our quick cleaning tip is that every evening for 15 minutes only we all pitch in and pick up toys, straighten up and whatever else, together! it’s amazing how much you can get done in 15 minutes!! I love paper towels for cleaning up the kids faces after a snack or a meal. I never like using the dish towels or dish rags for wiping faces, it kinda grosses me out:)

Oh enter me, please! Our family uses paper, er, Scot towels and TP like mad. You know how life is with boys!

    Thanks.

I use Scott towels for all kinds of messes and cleaning! My tip is to make sure that I always have a roll in the car for cleaning up messes on-the -go.

  • 8 Andrea // Sep 18, 2008 at 5:09 pm

My favorite cleaning AND organizational tip is to do it RIGHT away. If you’re using something, rather than just throwing it on the counter, put it where it belongs…and if you make a mess, clean it up before you move on to something else…it makes for a lot less work in the end!

  • 9 Kimberly // Sep 18, 2008 at 5:36 pm

I really was never a paper towel kind of girl until I met my husband now we go through paper towels like crazy. Scott towels are one of our favorites because they hold up really well.

Probably my best tip for cleaning with paper towels is one that my husband’s grandmother taught him.

Because crumbs are always ending up on the kitchen floor, wet a paper towel and throw it on the floor and then you can easily wipe up small messes with your foot.. No bending required! This keeps our floors clean without having to constantly sweep.

Of course this only works with quality paper towels like Scott. Otherwise, they fall apart all over the floor and you have an even bigger mess.

Now, I just need to get my husband to learn how to pick up the paper towel when he’s done. For some reason that part of grandmas cleaning trick didn’t stick :)

I use baskets to keep toys and such picked up. We used to keep them all in the family room, and the toys would be scattered throughout the house. Then I picked up some fun and funky colored baskets. Now, each room has a basket with toys in it. Some of the baskets are bigger, and the one in the kitchen fits perfectly on the baker’s rack. Pea always knows where her toys are…and she’s even figuring out how to put them away.

  • 11 Miche // Sep 18, 2008 at 10:39 pm

OH man, we fly through Scott paper towels!! My favorite cleaning tip with them is to use them while cooking. I pull out my Scott towels and have them handy to clean and wipe up messes as I go. With as strong as Scott towels are, I can usually rinse them out and use them over and over, so that I sometimes end up using only ONE paper towel while cooking (and if you’ve seen me cook, I’M A MESS) So, Scott towels are really miracles, and as much as I am a budget shopper, I do splurge on Scott Brand because they are SO worth it and overall, do end up lasting loner per roll because I get so much use out of just One towel vs the other brands where it takes half the roll to clean up a mess!

  • 12 Christina // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:35 am

My favorite organizational tip is to get a binder with plastic sleeves and put all your owners manuals into it. Each time you buy an appliance or anything that comes with a warranty, put the receipt, warranty info, and manual all in the sleeve. Each item has its own sleeve.

  • 13 Christy // Sep 19, 2008 at 12:26 pm

There are so many things I don’t like to clean. I use a Scott paper towel on the “so disgusting” parts of the house. Nobody wants to keep or wash anything that has touched some of the dirtiest parts of the house. I also get satisfaction in seeing how dirty the paper towel is before I throw it away. You know you all do it!

  • 14 Leeanthro // Sep 19, 2008 at 4:49 pm

We keep a roll of paper towels in the kitchen mounted under the cabinet, but we also have an attractive freestanding paper towel holder on the breakfast bar where we eat and craft. That way if we need to clean up a child’s spill or mess, we don’t have to get up.

  • 15 Susan P. // Sep 20, 2008 at 12:38 am

Scott has always been a good, reliable company. Everyone says Kleenex instead of tissue, similar to your DH & MIL saying Scott towel.

  • 16 Brandy // Sep 20, 2008 at 9:10 am

Some of my favorite organization tips are:

Go through the mail over the trashcan and toss away all the junk mail.

Spend 10 minutes every day cleaning family areas to prevent clutter.

My husband says Scott towels too. Funny.

Organizational tip: We keep a roll of Scott towels under each sink and in every room (except bedrooms) so that we don’t have to go looking for the Scott towels when they’re needed. With the Scott towels are, of course, cleaning supplies. Makes it easier. Everything is right there.

We also stock up on Scott towels and cleaning supplies and store extra in the garage.

  • 19 Jessica // Sep 20, 2008 at 2:08 pm

My cleaning tip is to pick on day a week to clean a certain room. Like Tuesdays are my bathroom days and Sundays are my Kitchen days. And the laundry is done on Mondays.

  • 20 Sandy // Sep 20, 2008 at 2:28 pm

my favorite tip is clean as you go- even with mail- save money too- toss the catalogs as they come(better go call and get them stopped)- cuts down on the pile and another big organization tool is have a totebag for mail(post office) library, etc and have them by the door and put the stuff in them as you get done reading- leass searching for the item or having to ask anyone I am going to the post office ..anyone have anything to be mailed… Little things add up. Oh I like scott towels too and only use it for the bathroom, grew up on it…doesn’t clog- it dissolves

  • 21 Kristan // Sep 20, 2008 at 4:42 pm

definitely containers - all types and sizes to sort all types and sizes of things in every room of the house. :)

  • 22 Shilo Beedy // Sep 20, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Try to choose one room or area to clean and focus on that for the day. Another tip is to get your get your kids involved in with the chores.

  • 23 Emily N. // Sep 20, 2008 at 6:14 pm

My best tip for organization is to read David Allen’s book “Getting Things Done” and do what it says like create a great file system that you’ll actually use and take action right away on things that don’t take much time rather than putting them off.

  • 24 Rebecca C // Sep 20, 2008 at 10:39 pm

I try to clean something small everytime I am in a room, that way it doesn’t feel like one big job. Example: in the bathroom I will do a quick swish of the toilet.

Also, in the kitchen clean as you cook, that way there isn’t a huge job to do when dinner is over.

Train each person in the house to wipe down counters as they wash their hands or use the sink area.

  • 26 Kimberly Wood // Sep 21, 2008 at 5:24 pm

I like to keep a basket handy to transfer things back to the area where they came from. I also do some housework eadh possible day that I can so I don’t have to do it all at once. A vase of flowers always looks like you put more effort in it if you are having company.

  • 27 Megan // Sep 21, 2008 at 8:14 pm

I keep a plastic box in my daughter’s closet. When she outgrows something, I put it in the box right in the closet. It makes it supereasy to organize her old clothes.

  • 28 Reiza // Sep 21, 2008 at 9:19 pm

My tip is to take the time to teach kids how to help with the cleaning when they’re small and they actually want to. It drives my husband nuts that it takes the kids so long to clean the tub, but this way, they get to help and they’re learning how to do it. So when they’re bigger, they’ll have the responsibility and the know how to help.

  • 29 Genevieve // Sep 21, 2008 at 9:52 pm

I use baking soda and/or vinegar to clean almost everything. Works great!

  • 30 Kimmy L // Sep 22, 2008 at 10:09 am

WOW!!! Now this is a prize everybody could use.
The best grease-cutter in the world is baking soda coupled with a good liquid dish soap. Try it on that grungy stove hood. Wet a scrub sponge and squeeze out the excess water. Put a dollop of dish soap on the sponge. Sprinkle on baking soda, and wipe off the grease like magic.

Use lemon rinds to remove rust, ink and mildew.

  • 31 sandra jensen // Sep 22, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Wipe it up while it is still wet! If you wait, you have to scrub and spend more time.

    Thanks! Love Scott Towels!

  • 32 Kimberly // Sep 22, 2008 at 7:31 pm

My best cleaning tip is vinegar & water. I use it to clean everything and I no longer have a huge stash of various cleaning products under my sinks.
The organizational tip that works for me is: lists! If I write it on a list, it WILL get done. Not on a list, forget it!
Thanks for the chance to win your great giveaway!

  • 33 Mommy Zabs // Sep 22, 2008 at 8:39 pm

AHHHH Mine was taken just above me. But I use vinegar for about everything! My husband hates it because of the smell, but it goes away quickly. Organizational tip? DECLUTTER. I’m always decluttering. I hate piles :)

  • 34 mannequin // Sep 22, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Try as I might to use fewer paper towels, I just can’t. They’re just too handy and too well, necessary. Scott has always been our favorite brand. If they are out of it, we wait till they restock.
With animals, there is always a need for paper towels.
My time saving tip involves stairs. Instead of running up and down the stairs thirty times a day, I keep a basket at the top and and a basket at the bottom and empty and fill as I’m going up and down. Saves me lots of time to clean!

  • 35 Sara // Sep 23, 2008 at 9:41 am

My best cleaning tip is to keep Scott paper towels and cleaning supplies in each bathroom and the kitchen so I can spotclean on the go. That way my rooms are always clean and I’m not forgetting to bring the cleaning products with me.

  • 36 Stacey // Sep 23, 2008 at 9:48 am

My cleaning tip isn’t as exciting as some of these other great ones, but something that helps me is having a place for just about everything, so that when the time comes to do a quick pick-up or even a deep clean, there isn’t clutter in the way. thanks for the entry! We could totally use this!

  • 37 Laura G // Sep 23, 2008 at 10:45 am

we love scott products! my tip is keep plastic shopping bags in an old coffee can under the sinks for quick trash/mess collections.

  • 38 Kelly S // Sep 23, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I love Scott towels! Our newest mess is crayons/markers on the carpet. Blotting rubbing alcohol with Scott towels has actually worked. Great giveaway!

  • 39 Elizabeth M. // Sep 23, 2008 at 6:09 pm

What has always worked for me is to assign each day to a zone or room of the house and clean it every week on that day. It breaks it all into manageable amounts and the whole day isn’t wasted cleaning.

  • 40 Tamara Bennington // Sep 24, 2008 at 10:36 am

Family of Scott towels here too. Favorite cleaning tip is keep those old socks that have a little hole in them. I put them on the end of my broom handle and am able to clean the corner of high ceilings, behind the washer & dryer and it is great to dust behind a big TV armoires or underneath the beds.

  • 41 Beeb Ashcroft // Sep 24, 2008 at 10:45 am

I’ve been a member of their Common Sense community for a while. They’ve got some great tips!

My cleaning tip is to use a lint roller on your couch. It gets any pieces of dust or lint off it and leaves it looking great!

Thank you for offering such a wonderful giveaway! What a fabulous, money-saving prize!

  • 42 Shana // Sep 24, 2008 at 5:12 pm

My cleaning tip is BABY WIPES. Even now that Andrew is potty trained we still keep them on hand. The are good to remove crayon marks, sticky spots, dirty hands, etc.

And this prize would be such a blessing to my family. The money we could save!!!

Now I am off to check out Scott Common Sense.

  • 43 Chrissy // Sep 24, 2008 at 10:51 pm

We use Scott products here too, although I’ve never heard them called Scott towels! Interesting, haha. My cleaning tip is to make my boyfriend do the jobs I don’t want to. ;-) Actually, we try to space things out - if you dust one day, clean the bathroom another day, straighten up the living a different day, etc, you never feel like you’re actually cleaning. And for organization I keep as many things as possible in clear containers, from random things in the bedrooms closets to baking products.

  • 44 Kristinia Clos // Sep 25, 2008 at 8:56 am

My favorite cleaning tip is focusing on one room at a time at least daily, I also have my son to help with areas of the house he’s allowed to help clean, this teaches cleanliness and gets the job done!

I’m off to check out Scott! We use their TP so this would be awesome!

don’y get easily distracted on another project

  • 46 Becca // Sep 26, 2008 at 8:42 pm

my fave tip is to spend a little extra time to save a whole of time. for instance, after cleaning the top of the fridge, lay newspaper or a layer of Saran wrap up there so next time you can just pull it off and throw it out.
Line the stover burners with aluminum foil so you never have to scrub again.
Use car wax on the shower walls and doors to prevent build up. Cut a piece of sponge to put in the soap holder in the shower so you are never scrubbing off built up soap.
Once you get in the habit you will find more and more ways to avoid the heavy, hard, time consuming cleaning down the road.

  • 47 Kathryn Gutierrez // Sep 27, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Scott TP lasts my family longer then any other brand. We don’t need cotton softness for everyday use-I think it’s ridiculous to pay twice as much for less when it literally gets flushed down the toilet anyway.

  • 48 Kerrie // Sep 28, 2008 at 4:25 am

We only use Scott TP in our house…it seems to be the only brand our toilet likes. =)

My tip is that if you have tile floor with something stuck on it, use a Brillo pad. I used them on our bathroom tiles the last time I cleaned…thought they would scratch them but they came out looking great!

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  • 49 Jenni // Sep 28, 2008 at 1:21 pm

    ScoTT Is Our Brand!

  • 50 Laurie B // Sep 28, 2008 at 3:24 pm

I use paper towels in the kitchen and baths. What is BETTER???

In the bathroom I use paper towels to scrub the toilet and then throw all of them away. Then I don’t have to wash dirty rags from that job.

In the kitchen I use paper towels to put on the counter when making a sandwich. Then drop the crumbs in the sink, and use the paper towel for my napkin while I eat.
