We have to have snacks, drink, movies for car ride, Nintendo DS and lots of smiles when we travel with our little ones. Oh, and don’t forget the numerous stops for potty breaks.

healthy snacks, puzzles, books, and they have generic “ipods” so they can tune each other out.
and then playing cards so when they feel like playing together they have a few games they can play. so snacks and lots of games! and we make a few planned pit stops that I know of that have some cool stuff to look at, a HUGE gorilla at one. try and keep it fun, and keep hubby relaxed to!

We were supposed to fly out at 9AM to catch a cruise ship the next day. We had our four kids, the youngest was 10 months. Due to airplane problems, we didn’t get off the ground until 9PM! We spent 14 hours in the airport. The funny thing was, we loved our trip after all!

I love Hanes! I don’t have any little ones to make comfortable on my travels but EVERY time I get on a plane someone has a screaming baby! Not too pleasant for travelers not used to that… Hopefully they’ll find a way to make their baby more comfortable.

My sister, her friend and I were coming back from Six Flags Great America and she had to urinate very badly. Unfortunately, we were caught in massive construction, and some of the exits were closed. I finally was able to take an exit; the only problem was it was 11pm on a Sunday night and nothing was open; even the gas station was closed! So, I pulled into a dark area behind a bank with some bushes and my sister goes to do her business. All of a sudden, a car drives past us and enters the ATM, with there lights shing on my bare butt sister:)

We were on our way to visit my father in Florida. My daughter was in her carseat in the backseat with her favorite wubby…a stuffed rabbit that had seen better days. Suddenly she starts screaming in the backseat..she had chucked wubby out the window on the freeway. We had to pull over and my husband had to walk almost a mile back to find wubby or we’d have had to endure her cries all the way to Florida. Needless to say, we kept her window rolled up the rest of the trip.

Our 8 month old has grown to hate his carseat, so I spend a lot of time in the backseat trying to entertain him. His favorite items are always, of course, the non-toys, like the straw from my iced coffee……and when I get really desperate I give him my keys. Works every time!!

We try to make our kids more comfortable on the road, by first bringing with us a pillow and small blanket for them. In addition, we have special toys that they only get to play with when we travel. So, they look forward to us taking out our travel bag of toys. We also have family games that we play. Like counting how many UPS trucks we see or how many Fed Ex trucks. Since most times those trucks are on the road. Thanks so much for this giveaway.

After vacationing out of state,we had way more stuff to bring home than we took with us. The only space left was the middle of the backseat between the 2 kids. We piled stuff from floor to ceiling in the middle. It was an amazingly quiet trip when the kids couldn’t see each other or pinch, jab or poke each other!!

The first time we took a car trip with my step-daughters, we brought the dog too (why not save on a kennel bill if you can?). Man was that a stuffed car. 2 8 year olds and a dog in the back seat of a Toyota Camry. Of course, our dog gets car sick and threw up not an hour into the 8 hour drive. We will always remember that Christmas!!
Of course, we always bring drinks, snacks, and a toy!

When I was young, we rented a car to travel to the beach in July because we thought our old car would not make it. All we could afford to rent was a used car, only a little bit newer than our family car. It overheated only one hour into the journey. My dad did something to it (all I remember was having to get out of the car while it steamed really bad), and we were on the road again, only to have the air conditioning break about twenty minutes later. We had to ride in the heat for six hours to the beach! Dad was able to fix the car while we were at the beach, but that left us little money for fun and food. I remember eating peanut butter and jelly sandiches and cereal the whole time.

What my children remember most about vacations is that we had to hit every rest stop we passed because my wife has kidney and stomach problems.
We have been married for more than 38 years so - it’s funny now - but it was extremely productive for the children - to see how much variety there are in rest stops in the different states.

This past March, we went on a road trip, and of course, the car was packed. So, to help alleviate some discomfort, we put some things in black garbage bags and put them on the bike rack on top. We had one couple ask us if we were on a road trip. We looked at their SUV, and they apparently had done the same thing. We’re close friends now!

Roadtrips with my son are always interesting. We try to make him as comfortable as possible keeping him in his jammies along with his blanket and favorite toy. He’s a very picky eater, so he won’t eat just anything. So we have to pack “Jack” approved food…which means fruit which you just can’t hand to a toddler and expect him to keep clean. So I have to sit in the back most of the way there to make sure our little prince in comfortable.

Here is my story: *dramatic pause*. When my first baby (Jojo) was 7 weeks old, we went to Laos, Southeast Asia.
The first week, I was showing some visitors around an indoor/outdoor market and my baby was really really fussy. I took all of his clothes off, hoping he was hot and it would help. He continued to cry, so finally out of desperation I decided to kneel in an alley to nurse him.
A CD seller in the market saw me and insisted that I sit in her booth. The “booth” was about 2 feet deep and 7 feet wide…just big enough for a stool behind a counter and a vertical wall of CD’s for sale. I sat on the stool and tried to get my baby to discretely latch on. My baby was overwrought by now and would not latch on.
In an effort to “help” me, the CD booth lady decided she would hold my shirt for me, only she held it WAY UP, about chin level. At that same moment I was aware of a small crowd of southeast Asians gathering to see what an American breast looked like. They DEFINITELY got to see EVERYTHING.
My baby never did latch so finally the CD lady took him from me and he instantly fell asleep in her arms. It was pretty embarrassing at the time but now it is one of my favorite stories. I went on to nurse my son for 26 months, but we never went back to the market!
I’m now nursing my second child, and despite the awkward moments and accidental “flashing” of gawkers, I think breast feeding is the perfect thing while traveling with baby.

Well everyone he came across he had to tell them “I am wearing my mommy’s panties” It was hard to explain that over the loud laughter….

When my kids start getting restless/noisy in the car, my husband will suddenly yell something along the lines of, “Watch out! There’s a T-Rex!” and then he’ll start swerving (carefully, of course), ducking, and bouncing in his seat as we run over t-rex feet & tails. They quickly join in, claiming they heard a velocirapor on the roof, or that there’s a spinosaurus after us. I’m not sure it helps much in the noise department, but they are definitely entertained!

I was in the back seat with my brothers and sister and they started screaming because they saw a big Mickey Mouse. They were so excited because they knew where we were going. Finally I spoke up with anger in my voice and said “I don’t get it, where are we going” Everyone just laughed and it was not until pulled up to the park and the guy said “Welcome to Disney World” that i knew where we were. I think the funniest travel story I have is a comment my daughter made to my son. We were heading to TN and we just stopped off and grabbed some McDonalds - we were eating in the car and the kids were messing with each other. My daughter who was 6 at the time looked at my 9 year old son with her arms crossed and said “Jacob you may eat like a man but you certainly don’t act like one” - Oh my my husband and I laughed for about 2 hours straight!! It was hysterical. We asked her where she ever heard that and she said the Rugrats show. Boy what kids remember. It was so funny!!

I don’t know if this is funny travel, but it certainly made me laugh. We just brought home our newborn twin boys and had to take a road trip the other week. For the first time, I got to yell, “Quit hitting your brother!” and bargain with my 3 yr. old son as to what kind of awesome things could happen if he would simply keep his hands to himself for just 20 more minutes.
107 Mary // Aug 19, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Once we were traveling with 3 of our kids down to southern CA. One kid, the youngest boy was frequently having to go the bathroom. Not abnormal but it seemed pretty frequent. We were on a busy freeway and couldn’t find any place to stop, he was crying and couldn’t wait so we finally handed him an empty bottle we happened to have and told him to go for it. He was sitting in the back between his little sister and teenage brother and was embarrassed. His sister turned away and didn’t look but his brother was of course teasing him. At first he just couldn’t do it but finally he relaxed and peed to the relief of all of us!

110 Deb // Aug 19, 2008 at 11:36 pm
My son is 10 but since he was old enough to express himself, he has had no ability to sit for long periods of time but not for the reason you are thinking of. His words are this..”my butt hurts.” He has always had to sit on a pillow or else we have to hear how his butt hurts the whole trip. 7 hrs (how long it takes to get to Grandma and Grandpa’s in Wisconsin) is a long time to hear about his backside. Anyway…that’s my funny story and how I make my kids comfortable all rolled up into one.

I remember the long trips in the old station wagon when I was a kid. I fighting over who got to control the radio, who got to talk on the cb radio, who got the front seat and who got stuck in back with the dog drooling down their neck. These days kids have it made with headphones and portable dvd players. Music and movies with headphones are the key to me enjoying the ride in peace and quiet

Before we leave for a car trip, I let my kids pick out a book, or magazine they like and usually that will occupy them for a while!
117 Erin H. // Aug 20, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Well, it’s pretty basic, but we make them comfortable by putting up window shades, making sure they each have a bottle of cool water, and removing their shoes. Thanks for the contest!

129 joanna smith // Aug 21, 2008 at 6:54 pm
We have 3 children, and when we travel we make them more comfortable by stopping frequently at designated places that we have mapped out ahead of time and giving our children an opportunity to experience something fun at each of those designated stops. If it means taking us twice as long to get to our final destination that’s okay because along the way we have had the opportunity to build memories and experience something fun and we consider that part of the entire road trip adventure. BTW - I love Hanes products for our children. They are classic and stand the test of time!

When my kids were young, I packed to do bags in paper bags. (We had a two day car trip.) But I did not give them to them at the beginning. They packed their own “busy bags”. After about 3 hours or so on the road, when they began to get restless, I would pull out a bag from my stash. They were things I picked up at the dollar store or games I printed off the internet or even things I created my self (the standby license plate game always came out first). Some of the bags had snacks in them, too, but most did not. Luckily my two are only 19 mos apart, so they liked the same things all along. They enjoyed the surprises and I enjoyed putting them together. Even now that they are teenagers and are capable of entertaining themselves, I bring along a surprise or two.
Thanks for having the Giveaway!
134 Susan P. // Aug 22, 2008 at 12:06 pm
In 1968, my family drove from Colorado to Florida in our station wagon, when we were moving to the Bahamas. We were in Georgia and stopped at a gas station to fill up. There was a stand that had little paper bags that were for sale, 25 cents apiece. My dad asked the guy what they were and he said “bald peanuts”. Thinking they were unshelled peanuts my dad bought us each a bag. We’re going down the road and tried our peanuts. They weren’t “bald” - they were boiled! They were awful and we threw them out the car windows - bag and all.

I love this giveaway, and i try to keep the kids comfortable while traveling by dressing them in loose fitting clothes, gathering their favorite snacks and we listen to books on tape
136 Marlena // Aug 22, 2008 at 1:19 pm
I always dress my toddler in sweats or other comfy clothes and be sure to pack blankies and stuffed animals to make napping on the road more cozy. I also hide away toys so that when it is time for a road trip…the toys are new and exciting again without having to break the bank on NEW ones.
137 Vicki // Aug 22, 2008 at 6:15 pm
When the kids were little, we actually used to pack a small plastic toddler potty in the back of the van because they certainly couldn’t hold those bladders very long! Now we make sure that each child has a “travel bag” with their favorite puzzle books, DVD’s, electronic games, etc for long rides.
138 Sara G // Aug 23, 2008 at 1:44 am
I try to keep them well hydrated and in comfy clothing like PJ’s.
139 Jeffrey // Aug 23, 2008 at 2:48 am
When we drive to our daughters grandparents house, we will always leave just before nap time. This is the most comforting for the kids so they won’t be stuck in their seat forever. The drive is about 3.5 hours and so they sleep through half of it. Then we also bring along children songs on CDs so they can listen to them and sing along.
140 the mama hood // Aug 23, 2008 at 2:11 pm
Our main road trip we drive annually is a 10 hour drive. With four kids all 6 and under it can be a challenge to keep them all happy. We have some of their favorite toys and one new travel game or toy for each one of them to discover, like doodling sets and we play games like ” I spy”, which is always fun. We pack tons of snacks and drinks that are easy and not too messy for them to handle. The DVD player is a must have as well as headphones and all of their favorite movies. We all sing along and they wiggle in their seats to their favorite kids songs. We think it helps to travel in the early morning hours because they are more sleepy during the road trip.

Pillows and blankets. This way naps can be taken. It limits the bickering when you have 5 kids.
150 Christine M // Aug 24, 2008 at 11:33 pm
My kids have special blankets that they use for travel. They are light weight, so they are easy to pack, and not only keep them warm in the air conditioning of the car or a plane, but make them feel cozy.

We take plenty of snacks and drinks! I sit by my granddaughter and we have a great time playing travel games. We look forward to Welcome Centers, to get plenty of brochures to read and enjoy on the way. We learn alot about each state, and each other!
152 Sherry Brooks // Aug 25, 2008 at 2:33 pm
Make sure everyone is dressed for comfort (thank you, Hanes!), plenty of healthy snacks (no thank you, greasy fast food which can really upset tummies!), find interesting topics of conversation about things along the way and provide plenty of quiet time activities for when dad or I need to concentrate on traffic, be willing to make pit stops with no problems when necessary, just enjoy being together. The purpose IS to enjoy this together, right?

We drove to Yellowstone from MN in June. We had travel pillows and blankets ready for car naps, bags of snacks, and plenty of DVDs and books.

I pack a small bag of treats such as a new cd, a couple of new dvds, snacks, new books and small toys. I pull out something when the kids start getting restless. It keeps them busy and happy for awhile. They also know that fighting will delay me opening the bag. I also have to say that the portable dvd player was one of our smartest buys. It really does help keep them entertained.

Once, on a family trip to Branson, my 8-year old niece decided she had to go potty not long before we got to our hotel. For some reason, we couldn’t find a place to stop, but we were driving around a lake the whole time. Her Grandmother commented about the irony, and we all laughed, including my niece, then she said, “Please, don’t be funny! I have to go!” Finally, we found a little store with a public restroom. We laugh about that today.

We take bunches of snacks, fruit and small games but the neatest item we take is a portable DVD player with movies. We also make frequent potty stops with a little bit of running time to stretch those little legs…this really makes a long trip much nicer.

We each have a bag of goodies to keep us entertained while on the road. Snacks for each of us, toys for my daughter, magazines for me, books for my mom and hubby doesn’t get anything…..he needs to focus on the road!
165 Cheri Sanford // Aug 27, 2008 at 9:49 am
I have two young children so it’s more of hassle when traveling. I like to dress them cool and comfy when we travel so I like hanes clothing. Hanes clothing is definitely comfortable! We play the “I Spy Game” along with the kids just asking about 100 questions about whatever is outside. We love to go and take road trips with our kids! We love to sight see along with going to family gatherings and just to get out of the house! We try and do a variety of things with our kids even though they are only 3 and almost 2! They are constantly learning from their surroundings and love adventure. We know they like to be comfortable and so do we, so what better way than to wear Hanes! Thanks Hanes!

We had been in the car for about ten hours (with potty breaks of course) and when we got to the hotel, my kids were so excited to get out of the car and stretch. They saw and were really jazzed and raced to check the temperature. My daughter’s legs weren’t quite ready for running however, and rather than stopping at the pool, she ran straight in. The manager was watching from his office window and brought her a towel and asked if he could take her picture for the newsletter because it was one of the funniest things he had ever seen.

When my daughter was an infant we decided to drive from Maine to Florida. The only thing that kept her content was a singing Sesame Street book. By the end of the trip my husband and I knew every single song by heart and wanted to throw the book into the ocean but we knew that we needed it for the ride home. To this day we still both know all the songs by heart.

I’ve had to make a 8 hour drive by myself and 3 kids a few times this summer and it definitely helps to be prepared. I stock a cooler full of snacks and drinks, bring plenty of books to read, paper and crayons to color with, favorite music and of course dvd’s to watch. It had worked out pretty good each time. We’ll see as we do it again on Tuesday.
