It’s that time of year. Pumpkins. Foliage. Hayrides. Mums. Making every single word that rhymes with “ock” into a lame play-on-words for October.
A few I’ve heard just this week?
“Rocktober” for, oh… just about everything. An overly abused variation: “Rocktoberfest.”
“Blocktober” for a block party.
A local car company, Boch Toyota, playing commercials for their “Bochtober Fest.”
And a radio station calling itself the official “New Kids on the Blocktober” station.
Must we go there? Really.
It got me curious, though, to see what other innocent words were being abused due to the sheer misfortune of a coincidental rhyme. So I did a little Googling and found a few more gems.
There’s “Shocktober,” a haunted event in Pennsylvania (and not, as I was hoping, a place where you could practice tazing people throughout the month of October. Because I so would have been there.)
For die-hard Johann Sebastian Bach fans, there’s an annual “Bachtober” organ concert.
There’s “DOCtober,” an international documentary film festival.
There’s “Flocktober Fest,” a fly-in(?) and aviation appreciation day. I’m not making this up.
A “Jocktober Contest” run by a fantasy sports site.
A “Knocktober Fest” put on by a roller derby team.
A month-long celebration of socks called (you guessed it) “Socktoberfest.”
Some mavericks even paved their own path with words that didn’t exactly rhyme with “ock” but were close enough. That’s why we have “Walktober,” celebrating October as the National Walking Month, and a talk radio station’s “Talktober.”
I’m already making plans for next year. I’m planning a Biological Clocktoberfest and a Writer’s Blocktoberfest, too. We’ll celebrate Insulin Shocktober and maybe even Bankoktober if there’s time.
Who’s with me?

That’s too funny. I’d be annoyed by the insanity too if I wasn’t laughing so hard. I’ll be anxiously awaiting Writer’s Blocktoberfest, though….although I have to admit I’m intrigued by Socktoberfest as well. Because, you know, socks are so underappreciated.

Hey, Janie… Were you watching the Red Sox/Tampa game on Sunday night when our local hometown boy Rocco Baldelli (from Rhode Island, but unfortunately playing for the Rays!) had his name “ocked” by a fan with a big sign in the stands?
Yes, siree… Roccoctober. There’s one for the books. Or, at least, the season! Or quite possibly for the World Series. Yikes.
Love, Mom

We could re-purpose “Shocktober” for everyone’s reaction to the financial meltdown this month….sad, but sort of true I guess…
