My cell phone rang on Sunday and I didn’t recognize the number. As we’ve previously discussed, that’s basically the best way to not get me to answer the phone.
So I obviously screened the call… and then listened to the voice mail the caller left.
“Jane…?” it started out.
Long pause.
Then: “It’s Patrick.”
And at that point I knew. I was busted.
Of course, this is not where our story began. For that, let’s go back a few weeks, shall we?
After a longer-than-necessary hiatus from working out, I decided that I needed to get back into the game. Audrey and I started Tweightloss and I, along with over 100 other participants, started getting serious about eating better and exercising.
After a few weeks, I started losing a little of my motivation mojo, so I decided to join a Boot Camp class at the YMCA.
The instructor? A 10-foot-tall (this might be a slight exaggeration), nary-a-place-on-his-body-without-a-muscle former track and field Olympian from Jamaica.
His name? You guessed it. Patrick.
Everything was going well for a while. I was attending Boot Camp three days a week, as well as working out on my own. I was getting serious again about keeping track of my calories.
And then things started getting busy. Work for Mom Generations and the Hot Blogger Calendar got in the way. Of course, that’s just an excuse… busy people find time to exercise all the time. I was just using the fact that I have been busy to justify why I started to bail on Boot Camp.
So I wasn’t entirely surprised to get a phone call from Patrick on Sunday. A phone call to let me know that I was busted.
He was very nice in his voice mail. He was more concerned as to why I hadn’t been around. In his cute but stern Jamaican accent, he said that Audrey told him work was kicking my butt… but that he was supposed to be the one doing that.
His tactic worked. It made me realize I had to get back to the gym. So last night I decided to go to a spin class with my brother-in-law. (I was dragging my feet a bit, but deep down I wanted to go.)
Since I was blowing off Boot Camp to go to spin class, I hoped I wouldn’t bump into Patrick. But you know I did.
As soon as I walked into the Y’s reception area, I saw him. I tried to hide behind my sweat towel, but given that it’s about 6″ x 12″, I wasn’t so successful.
Patrick saw me and looked happy to see me. I had to break it to him that while his phone call inspired me to get back to the gym, I wasn’t joining him in Boot Camp. He told me he was just happy to see me back there, and gave me a high five.
Spin class was tough, I won’t lie. I didn’t anticipate getting that out of shape in just 2 1/2 weeks. But I’m not going to quit again. I know what it’s like to be busted.
And I won’t get busted again. Especially by a 10-foot-tall, nary-a-place-on-his-body-without-a-muscle former track and field Olympian from Jamaica.

We could all use a Patrick in our lives for inspiration. *grin*
Keep at it, girl! It’s hard at first but it feels SO good afterwards (that’s what she said….sorry, couldn’t resist!)

LOL. That’s so funny. I’ve taken a bit of a break lately too (does busy really not count as an excuse anymore?) and am on my way back tonight, so it was nice to read this for some motivation/commiseration.

Kudos to you for actually going back on the exercise bandwagon!
I’ve never, ever been on it.

It’s all about the Spin class! My favorite (and only) work out. It’s TIME that none of us have, let alone motivation!

Hooray for you, Jane!
That’s awesome that you went in for a spin class! I actually wanted to join you guys in your Tweightloss journey, but being 24 weeks pregnant seems hardly the time to try to lose weight
Even more so now that I’ve been ordered on bed rest. Can I tell you how depressing that is??? *sigh*

You’re inspiring. I don’t even exercise, but I should.

[...] even more funny because last week Jane wrote a post about her trainer, and well… he was in the room and was happy to tell me that he printed out Jane’s blog [...]
