The birth of Henry…

July 2nd, 2008 · 13 Comments · motherhood, pregnancy

I’ve received so many emails asking me how Henry’s delivery went… and I just want to THANK everyone for taking the time to ask.

Henry was my first C-section delivery. It is safe to say that I was up ALL night before the C-section. Just thinking about everything… and just wanting everything to go perfectly.

The night before, June 16th… the boys and I spent precious tme together. Matt was working out for a couple of hours, so it was just me and my 3 boys - William, Alexander and Benjamin - for the last time without our Henry. We made cookies. We read books. We drew circles and squares and triangles. We played “Star Wars” with the boys’ figures… I even got to be Chewbacca and R2-D2, Alexander’s favorites! It was a great night because it was exactly what we all needed.  Time together… just the 4 of us.

I headed to the hospital the morning of June 17th at 8am. My C-section time was changed from 12:30pm to 10:30am the day before, so I was very excited to get going earlier. But then the wait began… 10:30am, 10:45am, 11am, 11:30am… and I was getting hungrier and hungrier by the minute (my last meal had been about 10 chocolate chip cookies at 10pm the night before!).

Finally, at 11:45am, a nurse called my name. Heaven!

The rest is somewhat of a blur, but…

I was able to get a photo of me before everything started…

And then it was like I was in a Grey’s Anatomy episode. I’m not kidding. Things started to go so fast. It was a little scary… very exciting… and I just couldn’t wait to hear that first cry from my son!  The nurses were wonderful.  Four came in and prepped me. The anesthesiologist came in and got me numb!  And my OB/GYN walked through the door like veritable Superman once I was already to go!  He was ready to get going…

It was probably a heck of a lot longer than this… but my OB/GYN asked me if I could feel him pinching my stomach… I told him I could feel something, but not really a pinch. That must have been the green light to go because within 15 minutes I heard a cry! The magical cry that only a mother knows… that beautiful sound of YOUR child. This is your CHILD. The one you created and had been carrying around for 40 weeks. This is yours. That perfect being. That perfect creation. Yours.

And within a split second… well, exactly at 12:09pm, the world was as it should be.

Henry was here.

And I became one man closer to having a basketball team!

What a beautiful photo of the two of you –he is so handsome! Congratulations! I don’t know how you did it — I am so scared of ever having to have a C-section — I probably would have passed out on the table.

You are only 2 boys away from a basketball team. Go for it! Only if you want more boys. Enjoy this time while they are little. It seems to go by so fast.

I’m glad things went smoothly and everyone is safe and healthy. You are amazing and brave. Henry is so beautiful! I got to hold a friend’s baby recently. There is nothing like their smell, their soft skin…oh, I want a baby too!

[...] One of my current obsessions is moms who have a lot of kids. There’s the mom at my daughter’s preschool who has a 3-year-old boy, 2-year-old twins and a newborn. There’s Kate Gosselin, mom to twin girls and sextuplets and the focus of TLC’s reality show “Jon & Kate plus 8,” which I just discovered last week and love. And there’s my bloggy friend, 30-year-old Audrey McClelland, who has been pregnant every year for four years and just gave birth to her fourth boy, Henry. [...]
