Chris Pratt Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. #2 #GotGVol2

2 thoughts for you on this Tuesday…

1. Chris Pratt
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. #2

You know an interview is going to be a blast when Chris Pratt walks into the room with a gigantic smile and says, “Hi, what’s up mommas?” The scene has been set and you automatically feel comfortable with him. That’s a pretty special gift right there!

Truth be told, I’ve been a Chris Pratt fan for years. I was one of those Parks and Recreation TV fans who never missed an episode. Chris’ character always had me laughing, he’s just naturally funny – it’s almost effortless for him. After watching Chris on Parks and Recreation, I started to follow his career and it was cool watching him soar. But the best part for me as a fan was seeing everything I had read about him… it made him seem: 1) like a super nice guy; 2) like the kind of guy who appreciates every ounce of his success; 3) and like a true, dedicated family guy. When I found out that I was going to interview Chris Pratt, I was hoping (hoping, hoping) that he was exactly like the kind of guy that comes across in his interviews and on social media.

Fortunately, Chris was exactly the kind of guy I thought he would be and that made this interview extra special and extra cool.

I personally LOVED Guardians of the Galaxy. It was the kind of film that I was able to watch with my family and we all loved it. These kinds of films speak to me. They’re truly important to me. Since this is a sequel to the first one, I was really curious to hear from Chris what made him excited about signing on to tackle the role of Peter Quill/Star-Lord again? What made this time around just as exciting for him?

When I was first introduced to the story, it was with James (James Gunn is the Director). We were sitting and smoking a cigar in his living room, and he was like, okay, here’s the story. So I didn’t get, I didn’t read the script, he told me exactly what was going to happen. And so, it was before the script had been written and when he told, when he told me that like I got, I-I was captivated, I’m so moved and impressed by this story. It’s completely different from the first movie, but similar in that it’s really going to surprise people and I think be really good. And, but it’s not going to be one of these sequels that’s just a rehash of what they did in the first movie. It’s taking a big leap forward. And so, for me, hearing that story for the first time, I was just like, I just felt so lucky that he’s the dude in charge of this franchise. Because he has such an awesome idea and is really the only one that could bring that idea to the big screen without screwing it up.”

I loved seeing the brotherhood between Chris and James. It’s the kind of work relationship we all hope for in whatever it is that we do with our lives. It was cool seeing that Chris had total faith in James and knew that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was going to just be awesome and incredible, before the script was even written!

We were all dying to know, without having Chris spoil anything for us… where does the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 pick up!?

“We’re picking up just a couple of months after the events of the first movie.”

And yes, we were all thrilled to find out that music will be a BIG portion of this one, too (insert happy dance!)!

So it’s just awesome, I mean, there are some songs that are some, oh I can’t wait to see them!”

What always fascinates me about actors and actresses are the costumes that they wear. A character isn’t a character until he/she has “dressed” as the part, right? As you saw from my post yesterday, we had the chance to check out the costumes while we were in Atlanta visiting the set. Walking through and seeing the costumes was really amazing to me. These costumes transform the actors/actresses into who we know on screen! We had the opportunity to see Chris’ costumes and we all couldn’t help but notice the iconic jackets – the long duster and the short jacket!

But that long duster jacket. That stood out to all of us, so we had to ask how much it weighed because it looked (and felt!) heavy!

I think when it’s wet it’s probably close to 50 pounds.”

What!? 50 pounds!! That crazy!! But it’s what Chris said about the long duster jacket that really made me smile. I mean, when I think of Peter Quill, I think the duster jacket.

The first time I ever put that jacket on, that was the first time I ever really felt like the character. They say that clothes make the man, but really-really the first time you see yourself, for me at least as an actor, when I’m in the wardrobe and I’m looking at myself, and it’s something that I would never really wear… you know, we don’t have one of those in my wardrobe! But when you see yourself in the clothes, all of a sudden, the weight of that jacket, the way it moves when you walk… I found my walk, and I found the-the-the feeling of this character for the first time. “

As a working full-time parent, it’s always interesting to hear the perspective of other working parents… especially when the parent is famous (as well as his wife, Anna Farris!) My kids love to come with me on work trips or be part (as much as they can) of work stuff that I do. It was sweet to hear Chris talk about his son and if he comes to the set and what he thinks of his famous Dad!

“He’s been to set a few times and I can’t really tell. It’s all about perspective, you know, he doesn’t really know a world where he’s lived in where his mom and dad weren’t on TV. It’s just a natural thing for him. It’s just, that’s life for him. So he comes to set and mostly he’s excited to see me, but he’s three and a half, he’s smart. I think he loves it that there are women and other children that are on set, or there are new people for him to meet and show off.”

And then, as parents do, he shared the funniest story with us about his son!

“The other day and this is true, and kind of embarrassing. He was behind the monitor, watching it and he just turns around and goes, ‘Can I get a coconut water?’ And I was like, whoa, okay. [INSERT HUGE LAUGHTER] Somebody needs to go, sweep something up or he’s getting a little too comfortable!”

Loved hearing this, it was so funny! We’ve all been in a funny and embarrassing moment as a parent and it was fun dishing with Chris about his! It made us realize that he is just a “regular” guy. He’s a husband. He’s a dad. It made this interview even more meaningful because we were able to talk to him with that in the back of our minds, too. The next question just seemed to fit perfectly in sequence after he was chatting about his son.

What’s the best review you want someone to say about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?

“With Marvel, I think what they’ve done is make movies that kids are going to love, because it has all the elements that kids love. But also, really great compelling stories that adults will watch and want their kids to see. What I want kids to walk away with is just an experience, you know. It’s less about what they think about us, but more about who they got to go see that movie with. They’ll always remember the time they went to go see Guardians of the Galaxy with their dad, or their mom, or their uncle. You know, that’s what I think about it, it’s not so much about what’s happening in the movie as much as what’s happening for that kid that day.”

I had 4 big takeaways from interviewing Chris Pratt on our secret set visit.

  • He’s very passionate about what he does, and you can really tell that he prepares and takes his work very seriously. You could literally see the excitement in his eyes about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
  • You can tell that everyone on the set really likes him. He’s the kind of guy that people are drawn to and respect. He never rushed any of us through the interview and took the time at the end to take a photo.
  • He IS as funny in person as he is on screen.
  • He REALLY loves his wife and his son.

What a pleasure interviewing Chris.

I think – as you can tell – this movie is going to be AMAZING! I can’t wait to see Peter Quill in action on the big screen!
