Best Mom Advice for Tackling a Cough #VapoRubMom

It’s that time of year. There’s snow on the ground. There’s constantly a chill in the air. There’s boots and gloves and hats out all ready to be worn. You (literally) can’t go outside without being layered up. Oh, yes… it’s officially the winter season in New England.

One thing always holds true during this time of year, the “cold season” hits our house. At any given time, at least someone in my family (including me!) has a cough or a cold. One thing I’ve learned throughout my mom years, too is that when one person is sick, most likely, it’s going to spread through the house. It’s just par for the course here in the McClelland household.

Since I’m pretty used to tackling coughs and colds with my family (pretty consistently) throughout the winter, I have my little “bag of tricks” always ready to go! It’s funny my little “bag of tricks” is actually advice from my own mother that she passed down to me. My mom was an expert in tackling a cough, I always felt like she knew exactly what to do and I want my kids to have that same calm and reassured feeling about me, too.

As soon as I hear coughing in our house, there are 3 things I always do:

  1. “Steam it out!” I’m not kidding, this is what my mom used to call it when I was a kid. The second she would hear me or my sister or my brothers coughing, she’d tell us, “let’s go steam it out!” Steaming is easy because all you need to do is run a hot shower in the bathroom with the door shut and the steam builds immediately on its own. The steam helps to loosen mucous and phlegm, which adds relief to your cough. It’s also very relaxing to just sit there and breathe in the steam. This is definitely a go-to for me throughout the day when someone has a cough. Instant relief!
  2. Warm tea with honey. A yummy cup of tea with honey can soothe immediately. As my sons have gotten older, a cup of tea is something that they will actually drink, so it makes it easy on me. Whenever I have a cough or my husband, tea with honey is the only drink of choice for us. Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, so it’s great to add into your cup of tea when you’re battling a cough or cold. It does wonders soothing your throat, too.
  3. Vicks VapoRub. There’s a #1 go-to for cough relief in the McClelland family and Vicks VapoRub is it. My grandmother used it on my mom. My mom used it on her 4 kids. And yes, here I am now with 5 kids, using it on them. There’s something so soothing and nostalgic about the scent of VapoRub that brings me back to my childhood. There’s also something pretty incredible about a product that has been used in my family since my own mother was a child. So… why do I love VapoRub for my family? Easy. It’s a topical cough medicine that goes on smoothly with medicated vapors that help relieve your cough. I’m not kidding, right now in our house, when it’s bedtime – you can smell the VapoRub as you walk from bedroom to bedroom. It’s a comforting smell because I know it’s helping my family. VapoRub’s vapors last up to 8 hours, so it’s comforting as a mom to know that the vapors help throughout the night. I’m always stocked up with VapoRub in the McClelland house, especially during the winter months.
