On the (house) hunt… soon!

Brian and I met and became friends at the end of the summer of 2009. We got to know each other well while chatting during our long runs together or while hanging out at the beach.

I’ve mentioned before that it was during one of those beach trips that I began to like Brian as more than a friend.

I remember walking along the shore with him and pointing out my “dream homes” among the beautiful houses overlooking the ocean.

A few months later, when we were officially dating, he reminded me of those walks and told me that even then he knew he wanted to build me my dream home someday.

Fast forward about a year and a half. Brian and I are finally starting to look at houses together!

Yes, we kind of live together right now, but our current living situation is a little… not ideal.

When I separated from my ex-husband, I left the house we owned together and moved to my parents’ house. My ex-husband and I sold our house. A few months later I moved to New York City and had my own apartment. I was living alone in Manhattan, and a big chunk of my paycheck went to paying my rent. I didn’t save any much money living alone in the city.

So when I moved back home after 6 months in NYC, I technically moved back in with my parents in order to save up some money. But most of the time I stay at Brian’s… mom’s house. Where he lives. Yeah.

It’s great to own your own business (which Brian does), but it can be a pain when it comes to getting a mortgage.

BUT! As of the end of 2010, Brian’s last two years of tax returns can show two full years of self-employment income… which is what most mortgage lenders require. And living rent-free for a year and a half has allowed me to save up some money for a down payment.

So it looks like our dreams of buying a house are coming together! I couldn’t be more excited.

It’s not going to be a house overlooking the ocean, that’s for sure (not yet, at least).

But I know that Brian has the building skills to make any home into a beautiful living space.

And besides… if the last year and a half has taught me anything, it’s that any home I get to live in with Brian is my dream home.

I’ve grown to believe more and more that the saying “home is where the heart is” is so very true. So, I think as long as you are together, it will feel like home. And after seeing the photos of Brian’s construction skills in one of your prior posts, I’ve no doubt that he will be able to build or enhance any home the two of you decide on. Congratulations Jane and Happy Hunting! 😉
